Case Study

Swansea University

BSc Medical Pharmacology student, Prinka Parm, from Swansea university who was first in her family to attend university, from a low-income background and from a black and minority ethnic background, engaged with the Career Boost project. With aspirations in the medical field, Prinka identified a lack of professional contacts and an apprehension about interviews. Through the project, she received tailored guidance and financial support for the GAMSAT test and help to purchase a work-ready wardrobe.

With the help of an adviser, Prinka identified her strengths and areas for development. Despite her academic ability, she had no prior professional experience. A work placement at Public Health Wales in the Microbiology department was secured, where she undertook an environmental audit and networked with senior professionals. This placement boosted her confidence and expanded her professional network.

Post-placement, she reflected on her growth, noting improved communication skills, especially with senior staff. The experience solidified her career direction and feedback from her employer highlighted her preparedness and the potential for a long-term partnership offering work-experience opportunities.

“This placement enhanced my leadership and communication skills. I now feel equipped for future roles in my desired field. Make connections during placements; they’re invaluable for the future.”
